You might wonder if you can freeze coconut milk leftovers after opening a carton or can. The answer is yes. Coconut milk can be frozen, provided it is stored properly. Coconut milk freezes well and can be frozen very easily. Coconut milk is a staple ingredient that can be used in raw and cooked dishes.

It can also be used in sweet or savory recipes, making Coconut milk a popular choice. It is possible to freeze or store it in the fridge after using a can. This allows you to save money and reduce food waste.

Coconut milk can be frozen, but its texture and quality might get affected. It will separate once it has been thawed, and it will still taste delicious and can be used in your recipe. You will need to mix the coconut milk with your other ingredients like you would shake a can to get it to work.

Different Types of Coconut Milk

You will find two kinds of coconut milk at the grocery store, two very different products but are both called the same, leading to confusion.

One is the original coconut milk, which older generations associate with when they hear the word. This coconut milk comes in a can, containing only water and coconut. It’s used almost exclusively in baking and cooking, which is too thick for drinking straight. At room temperature, it can also be separated into fats and water.

Another is the coconut milk that younger generations associate with when they hear coconut milk. This vegan beverage can be substituted for cow’s milk, most commonly consumed straight. This is made of strained coconuts that have been soaked in water. However, it contains many other ingredients to ensure the fat and water are well-mixed at lower temperatures.

These two products are distinct and should be recognized as many variables must be considered when freezing them.

How to Freeze Coconut Milk? A Step By Step Guide

There are two options for freezing coconut milk, canned or open. You can freeze the coconut milk in smaller amounts to avoid waste.

Method 1 – How to Freeze Coconut Milk Ice Cubes

Step 1 – Portion and Freeze

Coconut milk should be fresh and not expired. Place the coconut milk in a clean ice tray and freeze it solid.

Step 2 – Pack and Seal

Place the coconut milk cubes on a tray and put them in a ziplock freezer bag. Keep the Coconut milk cubes in an airtight container to prevent them from absorbing any odors from food around them. This will help protect the taste of coconut milk. Before sealing, press any air out of the bag.

Step 3 – Label

Place the bag in the freezer and label it with the date.

Method 2 – How to Freeze Coconut in Containers

Step 1 – Decant

One cup of coconut milk should be poured into freezer-friendly containers or bags that can be sealed. To prevent coconut milk from spoiling quicker and absorbing odors from other foods, seal the containers tightly.

Step 2 – Close

Seal the zip lock freezer bags by pressing as much air as possible. Containers should be left with an inch of headspace. The liquid expands upon freezing and can burst containers if filled to the brim. Seal the container tightly.

Step 3 – Label and Freeze

If necessary, label the containers or bags with the contents and the date. Place containers upright in the freezer. To freeze flat, freezer bags can be placed on a baking tray. Once the coconut milk has been frozen, take the baking sheet off and store it in a freezer bag with lots of room.

How To Defrost Coconut Milk?

The nutritional value of coconut milk is not affected by freezing or defrosting it. The texture of the frozen coconut milk will be slightly different as it will separate into liquid and solid components. This is not a problem as you can heat the separated coconut milk to bring it back together.

There are several ways to defrost frozen coconut milk.

  • Put it in the fridge- Let it defrost in the refrigerator. For larger batches or cans, this can take up to 3 hours. It will take longer, but it will be better for the flavor, especially if you use it to make cold beverages.
  • In water– You can heat your coconut milk slowly in a saucepan of warm or cold water. It is quicker to melt coconut milk in boiling or warm water. Experts argue that freezing frozen milk too long can cause it to lose its nutritional value.
  • On the stove- An alternative is to heat your frozen dairy milk over a gas burner or in a saucepan with warm water until it’s melted completely. But, again, take care not to burn it.
  • In the microwave- This method is best. Use low power and often check, so your coconut milk doesn’t boil. Let it cool down for a few minutes before opening the container.

When defrosting frozen coconut milk, you may encounter flakes or lumps. Simply mix the mixture with a whisk or blender until there are no lumps and it is smooth.

Factors to Consider Before Freezing Coconut Milk

Separation- When freezing coconut milk, it tends to separate upon thawing. It can feel slightly grainy and change the texture of the milk.

There is an easy solution. To get the milk back to its normal consistency, simply run it through the blender. Although it won’t taste as fresh as coconut milk from the supermarket, thawed coconut water is great for making your recipes.

Brand- Different brands of coconut milk will freeze differently, so it is worth trying out several to find the one that works for you. It may not be your favorite brand that freezes well and tastes the same when thawed.

Convenience- It is a good idea to consider how you will use the milk. It’s unlikely that you will need large amounts of milk, so the Ice Cube method is quite good.

Defrosting Time- Plan ahead. To ensure that coconut milk is properly defrosted, it’s best to let it thaw overnight. This should be done at least one day in advance. You can also use cold water or the microwave if you forget or are short on time.
